Protect Our Ocean

Every drop matters. Every choice counts. Together, we can save our blue planet.

Why the Ocean Matters

The ocean covers more than 70% of our planet and is home to millions of species, many of which we have not even discovered yet. It produces over half of the oxygen we breathe and absorbs a large portion of the carbon dioxide we emit.

Healthy oceans regulate our climate, support global food security, and provide jobs and cultural identity for coastal communities around the world. Protecting the ocean means protecting ourselves.

“We have one ocean, one climate, and one shared future.”

Main Threats to Our Ocean

Plastic Pollution

Millions of tons of plastic enter the ocean every year. Plastic bags, bottles, and microplastics harm marine animals that mistake them for food or become trapped in them.

Sea turtles, seabirds, whales, and fish are all affected. Plastic never truly disappears—it breaks down into tiny pieces that spread throughout the water and even enter the food chain.

Overfishing

Unsustainable fishing practices remove fish faster than populations can recover. This destroys marine food webs and threatens the livelihoods of communities that depend on fishing.

Bycatch—unintended capture of dolphins, turtles, and other species—also causes serious damage to marine life.

Climate Change & Acidification

As the ocean absorbs more carbon dioxide, it becomes more acidic. This weakens coral reefs and shell-forming animals, disrupting entire ecosystems.

Rising sea temperatures cause coral bleaching and change migration patterns of marine species, putting additional stress on already fragile habitats.

What You Can Do Today

You do not need to be a scientist or live near the coast to protect the ocean. Small, everyday actions, when multiplied by millions of people, create powerful change.

Reduce Plastic Use

  • Use a reusable water bottle and coffee cup.
  • Bring your own shopping bags.
  • Avoid single-use plastics like straws and cutlery.
  • Choose products with minimal or recyclable packaging.

Make Ocean-Friendly Choices

  • Buy sustainable seafood certified by trusted labels.
  • Support companies that reduce waste and emissions.
  • Use eco-friendly cleaning and personal care products.
  • Save energy at home to cut carbon emissions.

Raise Your Voice

  • Share information about ocean protection with friends and family.
  • Join local clean-up events in your community.
  • Support organizations working to protect marine life.
  • Encourage leaders to create and enforce strong ocean laws.

Youth & Our Shared Future

Young people are powerful voices for the ocean. By learning the science, speaking up, and taking action, students and children can inspire families, schools, and entire communities to change.

Start an “Ocean Day” at school, create art from recycled materials, or organize a beach or river clean-up. Every project, no matter how small it seems, helps build a culture that respects and protects the sea.

Protecting the ocean is not just an environmental issue—it is a promise to future generations.
